Etymology of the name: the Greeks called it “Hikésia“ (supplicant) and then “Panaraia” (wholly cursed). The origin of its other name “Pagnaria” (without streams, spongy), remains uncertain. At one time it was also called “Euonymos” (the one to the left) because it was on the left of boats as they came out of the port of Lipari.
Origin: volcanic.
Volcanic Activity: There are still traces of endogenous volcanic activity, such as weak fumaroles in La Calcara, and emissions of gas from the sea-bed.
Age: It is the third oldest after Filicudi and Salina. Volcanic activity began 200,000 years ago and ended only 10,000 years ago.
