Etymology of the name: The Greeks called it “Hiera“ (the sacred), “Termèsa” (warm), “Terasia” (portentous). The current name is of Roman origin, in honour of the god Volcanus.

Volcanic activity: Vulcano has never ceased its activities, although limited. The phenomena present today are: fumaroles, mud, hot springs and geysers.
Age: A young island. Volcanic activity began 113,000 years ago, shortly before that of Stromboli and Alicudi, and ended with the last eruption of 1888-90.
