Etymology of the name: the Greeks called it “Stroggüle”, the Romans called it “Strongyle“, in the Sicilian dialect it was called “Strònguli“, which means round, spinning top; the islanders call it “Iddu” (He).
Origin: volcanic.
Volcanic activity: its activity is constant and has a regular rhythm. The explosions are intermittent and last a few seconds, at intervals of 10 -20 minutes.
Age: it is the second youngest after Alicudi. Volcanic activity began 160,000 years ago and continues until today.
